[May 17, 2024] — On April 10, 2024, Libra Group’s Chief Strategy Officer Phaedra Chrousos delivered a presentation at EmTech Caribbean, hosted by MIT Technology Review in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Before an audience of business leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and students, Phaedra discussed the role of corporations in unlocking the potential of the fourth wave of innovation – Deep Tech. She also emphasized how deep tech solutions marry science with the data and computing power we have today, offering breakthrough solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges.
Drawing upon her experience as Chief Strategy Officer of Libra Group, Phaedra discussed the challenges and opportunities of deep tech. She highlighted that the advent of deep tech presents a valuable opportunity for businesses such as Libra Group’s subsidiaries. This wave of innovation doesn’t have to be about winning or losing, but can be an opportunity for overall growth and transformation.
Phaedra underscored Libra’s vision for driving innovation by diving into case studies where subsidiaries embraced deep tech solutions in maritime, aviation, and space. One example was that of lomarlabs, the venture lab of one of Libra’s maritime subsidiaries, noting, “We are using our vessels as floating labs to help deep technology companies pilot their solutions, ultimately helping them reach the critical milestones they need to scale.”
In line with the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who stated, “The only constant in life is change,” Phaedra called for the private sector to embrace deep tech companies, advocating, “We can’t run from change; we should run to it.”
