[June 6, 2024] – UK-based Lomar Shipping, one of Libra Group’s maritime subsidiaries, has announced that it has sold the remaining container ships in its fleet. Almost 100 container vessels were sold in recent years, signaling Lomar’s exit from the container sector, for the time being. After many challenging years, Lomar benefitted from a long-awaited boom, generating in excess of $2 billion in sales proceeds from mid-2020 until the present.
Recently sold vessels in Lomar’s container ship fleet include sister vessels Sounion Trader and Spartel Trader, both 3,237-TEU boxships built in 2003 by CSBC in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and sold to Hong Kong-based HK Quanfu Shipping Co.
The 100 container vessels sold were among 150 vessels acquired by Lomar between the years 2009 and 2020. Today, Lomar has a fleet of approximately 30 vessels, primarily chemical tankers and bulk carriers.
Lomar’s strategic asset play and exit from the container ship sector has been underway for the past three years. In 2022, Lomar acquired Bremen, Germany-based Carl Büttner Holding GmbH & Co. KG for approximately $160 million. The company comprised a fleet of 6 tankers, including four newbuild state-of-the-art ECO/fuel-efficient ships. In the last year, Lomar has made approximately $127 million of investments in dry bulk vessels, adding 600,000 DWT to the fleet.
